Alex De Milio started it all in 1939 and, over the years four generations of the De Milio family have been involved in its operation: Alex, his father; daughter and grandson. During the 1940s and 1950s, Alex teamed up with a charming restaurateur, nicknamed Blackie, and together they attracted a clientele varying from Glen Miller and Tommy Dorsey to the Harlem Globetrotters and Rocky Marciano to the Marx Brothers and the Three Stooges.

The former Luxor Bathhouse, home of Spring, was founded in 1923 to serve families and immigrants of the neighborhood. Its classic Russian bathhouse design, called a schvitzbed, was modeled after baths in ancient Rome and hammams of Constantinople. Today's urban lifestyle generally has little separation between work and home, with long hours and certainly more pressure.

Born into the Taylor Street Little Italy tradition, La Vita's owners are three young guys from the neighborhood, Mickey Carioscia, Joe DeVito and Michael Garcia, who had big ideas to combine that tradition with sophisticated contemporary dining and decor.
